About this concert:
“…Sheer brilliance… Marie’s torch burns hotter and oft-times brighter than any of her peers” says “JazzTimes” about René Marie, a superlative jazz singer with an affinity for Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington. She returns with a seven-piece band to perform her program Jump In the Line!, a heartfelt tribute to the late actor, activist, and calypso innovator Harry Belafonte, joined by guest trumpeter Etienne Charles and trombonist Andrae Murchison.
In her words:
“Maybe it was the audible, irrepressible joy, the mischief, or the heartfelt delivery in every song he sang; qualities that obliterated any pain or doubt, drew me out of my shyness long enough to memorize “Man Piaba / Woman Piaba,” or “Cocoanut Woman.” By listening carefully, I could see in my mind's eye the full detail of whichever character he happened to be singing about.
Was it the percussion alone? Or the playful vocabulary of calypso as a whole? Was it simply the FUN in singing along with "Matilda", "Scratch Me Back" or "Jump In the Line"? Whatever the ingredients, I have memorized the lyrics, savored the music and danced to it my entire life.
Why am I having such a difficult time expressing what Belafonte's music means to me? Perhaps because it touches something so fundamental and personal that words simply dissipate. Here is what I am trying to say about Belafonte: long before I became aware of his dedication to the civil rights movement, he provided a healing for my spirit that I didn't know I needed. That laid the foundation for all his admirable works I was to learn about - and not merely learn about but attempt to imitate as an adult.
Excavating aspects of the depth, breadth and width of an artist's work in 90 minutes or less is an impossible endeavor. But we are going to have a LOT of fun trying...

I love that this man stands behind his basses. So often a musician will get a deal to make a "signature bass" or "signature guitar" and then they themselves never use it. Their name on the headstock is just an advertisement at that point. Marcus Miller plays Sire basses live and uses them all the time in demos and it shows how proud he is of the product. Sire's guitars are fantastic instruments. I've never played a better $500 bass than the V5.

He can take any song and make it his own. Such a beautiful arrangement. They key changes... Genius. The pure emotion he puts into it. Genius. We'll be seeing A LOT of Jacob in the future I know. My favorite part... "And you're the only one who YOU'RE the only one who (goes up) YOU'RE the only one.... Who knows. If Billy Joel heard this I'm sure he was beyond impressed where Jacob Collier took his song.

Love Marcus Miller, 1 of my favorite electric bassists of all time. I grew up listening to him when he was a musician with GRP during the late 1970s..playing with Lee Ritenour, Bernard Wright and Tom Brown Jamaica Funk.. same with Christian McBride, Marsalis Brothers..I love jazz every since I was 13..I am proud of Marcus, Christian, Wynton, quite a few others. cats born in the 50s, 60s and 70s keeping jazz live and teaching a new generation.. like Art Blakey with The Jazz Messengers.. excellent tutorial Marcus🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶

Where can I sign up for one of these “camps?” MM and I have only a few months difference in age. I came up on drums, mostly listening to bass. I’ve “heard” him for what seems like a lifetime but only learned how MUCH I’ve heard him as recently as five years. As I come to grips with my shame, I keep telling myself that I wasted far too much time trying to become a great basketball player.

I met Marcus Miller, May 2nd, 2012, in Wroclaw, Poland summer tour for the Renaissance Album he opened with Detroit, and they killed it. I was the only black man there that was not in the band out of about 3500 - 4000 people. I almost sneaked into the tent area backstage after the concert, but the guard at the last minute asked for my badge. Then I saw a black woman walking out of the tent and I yelled out for her to come get me so I can meet Marcus . I told her my name and that I flew from Little Rock, Arkansas - she said "Arkansas"? Where the hell is Arkansas? I said, that why I'm here. Her name was Rebecca and she said, "Boy come on, she told the guard to let me in, then she said "You out here making all this damn noise - we both started laughing. We went into the tent where the band was coming off stage and Rebecca said "Marcus this man out here from Arkansas and want to meet you. He was at the gate screaming and yelling. She introduced us and we shook hands and Marcus said, "Arkansas," "aw your country." Everybody laughing Louis Cato, Alex Han and Maurice Brown. I was overwhelmed with joy, I told him I'm left handed and then I can't thump like Wayman Tisdale. Marcus said, "I can't figure it out either how he played upside down and backwards. Wow! I did not feel bad then. It was truly my distinct pleasure to meet Mr. Marcus Miller - 7 T"s Untamed! P.S. The day before Guiness Book of World Records was there - A record was set for the amount of people who brought their bass or guitar out to play along with the band plugged into amps in the bleachers alongside the stage.
